Dry the wings: Remove the chicken wings from the refrigerator and pat them dry. Removing as much surface moisture as possible helps the skin crisp.
Mix the spices: Add the black pepper, smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, sea salt, and Italian seasoning to a small bowl. Stir to combine.
Season the wings: Sprinkle the spice mixture over the wings and toss to coat evenly.
Arrange the wings: Place the wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Drizzle the olive oil over the top.
Air fry: Cook the wings at 400°F for 15 minutes.
Flip the wings: Turn the wings with tongs and cook at 400°F for 10 more minutes.
Add the BBQ sauce: Use a basting brush to coat both sides of the wings with BBQ sauce.
Finish the wings: Cook for 5 additional minutes at 400°F to heat the sauce and lightly char the edges.
Serve: Serve hot with additional BBQ sauce on the side, if desired.

Notes
BBQ sauce: Use your favorite BBQ sauce. I recommend a hickory-style sauce for smoky flavor. For a lower-sugar option, use my homemade BBQ sauce.
Seasoning shortcut: You can replace the entire BBQ Chicken Spice Mix, including the salt, with my BBQ Seasoning.
Watch the sauce: BBQ sauces vary in sugar content, so keep an eye on the wings during the final 5 minutes. You want the sauce sticky and lightly charred, not burned.
Parchment: You can line the bottom of the basket with round air fryer parchment paper for easier cleanup, but it isn’t necessary if your air fryer basket and parts are dishwasher-safe.
