Green beans with bacon are one of those easy sides that can make dinner feel more complete without adding much extra work. The green beans stay tender with a little bite, the bacon adds a crisp, savory finish, and everything cooks in one pan.

Savory green beans with smoky bacon cooked in a skillet

What makes this recipe especially useful is how easily it comes together. The green beans cook right in the skillet with the bacon grease, then steam just enough to turn crisp-tender instead of soft. If you want the same easy approach without the bacon, my Sautéed Green Beans is a good one to keep on hand too.

Why You’ll Want to Make These Green Beans with Bacon

  • The bacon flavors the whole dish: The rendered bacon grease seasons the green beans from the start, so the whole pan tastes savory instead of feeling like bacon was just added at the end.
  • Everything cooks in one pan: This is the kind of side dish that feels easy enough for a weeknight but still works on a holiday table.
  • The texture is really good: The green beans stay tender with a little bite, and the bacon adds a crisp, salty finish that makes the dish feel complete.

Ingredients That Matter Most

Grab the exact amounts from the recipe card, but these are the ingredients that matter most for making this recipe turn out well.

  • Bacon: Regular-cut bacon works best here because it renders enough fat to help cook the green beans and still leaves you with hearty pieces in the finished dish.
  • Fresh green beans: Fresh trimmed green beans give this recipe its best texture. They hold up well in the skillet and stay tender without turning too soft.
  • Water: A small amount of water helps the green beans soften in the skillet after they sauté, which is what helps them turn crisp-tender.
  • Sea salt: Use a light hand here since the bacon already adds a good amount of salt.
  • Black pepper: This adds a little depth and helps balance the richness of the bacon.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder: These keep the flavor simple and savory without adding extra chopping.

How to Make Green Beans with Bacon

Let the bacon do the heavy lifting

Start the bacon in a cold skillet and let it cook slowly. That gives you crisp pieces of bacon and enough bacon grease to cook the green beans. The bacon is doing more than topping the vegetables here, so it is worth letting this step take a few minutes.

Cooking bacon pieces in a wide skillet over medium-low heat until lightly crisp, stirring occasionally

Cook the green beans right in the same pan

Once the bacon is cooked, the green beans go right into the skillet. They get a quick sauté in the bacon grease first, then a short covered cook so they turn tender while still keeping some bite.

Add the green beans and saute for 3 minutes. Use tongs to mix. Adding green beans to the skillet with bacon, sautéing for a few minutes, then adding water and covering with a lid to steam

Finish uncovered so everything tastes better

When the green beans are almost where you want them, add the bacon back in with the seasonings and finish everything uncovered. That helps any extra moisture cook off so the green beans taste savory and skillet-cooked instead of soft or watery.

Tips for the Best Green Beans with Bacon

  • Start the bacon in a cold skillet: This helps the fat render slowly so the bacon cooks more evenly.
  • Use a wide skillet: The green beans cook better when they have room instead of piling up and trapping steam.
  • Taste before adding more salt: Bacon can vary a lot in saltiness, so it is worth checking before adding too much.
  • Do not overcook the green beans: They should be tender with a little bite, not limp.
  • Add the bacon back near the end: This helps it stay crispier and keeps the texture more balanced.

Easy Ways to Change It Up

  • Add red pepper flakes: This is an easy way to give the green beans a little heat.
  • Use smoked paprika: A small pinch adds even more smoky flavor and works especially well with the bacon.
  • Add fresh garlic: If you want a stronger garlic flavor, minced garlic works well near the end.
  • Make the simpler version: If you want to skip the bacon, my Sautéed Green Beans uses a similar approach.

More Ways to Cook Green Beans with Bacon

If you want to make green beans with bacon in a gadget instead of on the stove, these are two good options to try.

  • Instant Pot Southern Green Beans: A good option when you want the softer texture and deeper flavor of slow-cooked green beans in less time.
  • Crockpot Fresh Green Beans with Bacon: A good choice when you want to start them earlier and let them cook while the rest of dinner comes together.

What to Serve with Green Beans and Bacon

These green beans with bacon work well with simple mains that need an easy vegetable side.

Serve them with Garlic Butter Steak Bites, Peruvian Chicken, Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken Thighs, or Air Fryer Salmon Filet for a dinner that feels balanced and still easy to pull together.

FAQs

Can I make fresh green beans with bacon without blanching them first?

Yes. The green beans cook through right in the skillet, so you do not need that extra step.

Can I use frozen green beans?

Fresh green beans work best here because the texture stays firmer. Frozen green beans can work in a pinch, but they usually release more moisture and soften faster since they are already blanched. If you’re using frozen green beans, skip the step to add the water. Instead, sauté them to heat and defrost them through fully before adding the bacon back to the pan.

How do I keep the bacon from getting soggy?

Cook it first, then add it back near the end. That helps it keep more of its texture.

How do I know when the green beans are done?

They should look bright green and feel tender with a little bite when you eat them.

Storage and Reheating

  • Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: Warm them in a skillet over medium heat for the best texture, or microwave just until heated through.
