Garlic Butter Rice is one of those side dishes that makes dinner feel a little more complete. It starts with jasmine rice cooked on the stovetop, then gets finished with butter, garlic, and simple seasoning that gives it more flavor than plain rice without turning it into a whole extra project.

This is an easy seasoned jasmine rice recipe to keep in your back pocket when dinner needs something warm, simple, and dependable. I like serving it with Lemon Garlic Chicken Thighs or Garlic Butter Steak Bites, and it also works well as the base for bowl-style dinners like Buffalo Chicken Bowls when plain rice feels a little too flat.

Why You’ll Want to Keep This Garlic Butter Rice in Rotation

  • It gives plain rice more flavor: Butter, garlic, broth, and a little seasoning turn jasmine rice into a side dish that tastes finished.
  • It works with a lot of dinners: This rice fits just as easily next to chicken or steak as it does under a bowl meal.
  • It gives you a reliable stovetop jasmine rice method: If you’ve been looking for a seasoned jasmine rice recipe that stays fluffy instead of sticky, this is a good one to keep around.

What You’ll Need

This recipe uses a short ingredient list, so the small details make a difference.

  • Jasmine rice: Jasmine rice gives this dish its soft, fluffy texture and light fragrance. It is the best fit here and makes the finished rice feel a little more special than standard long grain white rice.
  • Chicken broth: Broth gives the rice more flavor than water alone, so it tastes seasoned all the way through.
  • Butter: Butter gives the rice its rich finish and helps carry the garlic flavor through the whole pot.
  • Fresh garlic: Fresh minced garlic gives the rice a cleaner, stronger garlic flavor than garlic powder.
  • Sea salt and black pepper: These round out the butter and broth and keep the rice from tasting flat.
  • Chives or parsley: Optional, but a little fresh green on top gives the rice a fresher finish.

How to Make Garlic Butter Rice

Rinse the rice first

Rinsing the jasmine rice helps wash away some of the extra starch, which gives you a fluffier finished texture. It is a small step, but it helps the rice stay lighter and less clumped together.

Build the garlic butter base

Cooking the garlic briefly in butter before adding the rice gives the whole pot a deeper garlic butter flavor. Toasting the rice for a minute in that mixture adds another layer before the broth goes in.

Sautéing minced garlic in melted butter over medium heat, then stirring in rice to toast slightly

Let the rice cook low and steady

Once the broth is added, keep the heat low and leave the lid on so the rice cooks evenly and absorbs the liquid without drying out. This is what helps you get tender, fluffy rice instead of rice that cooks unevenly.

Rest, fluff, and finish

Letting the rice sit for a few minutes after cooking helps the texture settle. Fluff it with a fork, then stir in the last bit of butter so the finish stays rich and noticeable.

Adding chicken broth, salt, and pepper to the rice, bringing it to a boil, then reducing heat, covering, and simmering until cooked

Tips for Better Garlic Butter Rice

  • Rinse the rice first: This helps the rice cook up fluffier and less sticky.
  • Cook the garlic briefly: Garlic can burn fast, so you only want to cook it until fragrant.
  • Toast the rice in the butter: That quick minute in the pan gives the rice a little more depth.
  • Keep the lid on while it cooks: The trapped steam helps the rice cook evenly.
  • Let it rest before fluffing: A short rest helps the texture finish setting up.
  • Stir in the last bit of butter at the end: This keeps the butter flavor noticeable in the finished rice.

Easy Swaps and Variations

  • Use basmati rice: It can work if that is what you have, though the texture will be a little drier and more separate than jasmine rice.
  • Use vegetable broth: A good option if you want to keep the dish vegetarian.
  • Swap in olive oil: You will lose some richness, but it still works.
  • Try green onions instead of chives: They give the rice a slightly sharper finish.
  • Use it for rice bowls: This garlic butter rice works well as the base for Buffalo Chicken Bowls when you want something more seasoned than plain rice.
  • Adjust the finish based on dinner: A squeeze of lemon, more black pepper, or extra herbs can all work depending on what you are serving with it.

What to Serve With Garlic Butter Rice

This rice works especially well when the main dish already has a lot going on and you want a side that supports it without disappearing on the plate.

  • Lemon Garlic Chicken Thighs: A natural fit since the rice catches the extra lemon garlic butter well.
  • Garlic Butter Steak Bites: The buttery garlic flavors work really well together, and the rice helps turn it into more of a full dinner.
  • Cucumber Onion Salad: A cool, crisp side that balances the warm rice nicely.
  • Peruvian Chicken: A great choice when you want a rice side that works with bold chicken and sauce.

FAQs

Do I have to rinse jasmine rice first?

Rinsing helps remove excess starch, which gives you fluffier rice with less clumping. It is worth doing for the best texture. I usually rinse mine in a mesh strainer.

How do I make seasoned jasmine rice on the stovetop?

For this recipe, you rinse the jasmine rice, cook the garlic briefly in butter, toast the rice, then simmer it covered in broth until the liquid is absorbed. A short rest at the end helps the texture finish properly.

Can I use water instead of broth?

Yes, but broth gives the rice more flavor. If you use water, you may want to add a little more salt so the rice still tastes seasoned.

Can I use basmati rice instead of jasmine rice?

Yes. Basmati rice can work here, but it cooks up a little drier and more separate than jasmine rice. That means the finished garlic butter rice will be less soft and plush than the version I tested. It will still taste good, but jasmine rice gives this dish the richer, fluffier texture I wanted.

Why is my rice mushy?

Rice usually turns mushy from too much liquid, overcooking, or skipping the rest time at the end. Rinsing the rice and keeping the lid on while it cooks also helps with texture.

Storage and Reheating

  • Store: Keep leftover garlic butter rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze: You can freeze the rice for up to 2 months. Let it cool first, then portion it out so it is easier to reheat what you need.
  • Reheat: Reheat with a splash of water or broth so the rice softens as it warms. The microwave works well for this, or you can warm it gently on the stove.
