This keto chocolate mug cake is rich, chocolatey, and soft with a warm cake-like texture. It cooks right in the microwave, so it’s an easy option when you want a quick chocolate dessert.

If you want another keto mug cake, try my keto peanut butter mug cake. For something you can make ahead, my keto chocolate mousse and chocolate chia seed pudding are easy chocolate options.
Ingredients Needed
- Butter: Melt this directly in the mug before adding the remaining ingredients.
- Almond flour: Gives the cake its soft texture. You can also use coconut flour, but you’ll need less.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: Adds the rich chocolate flavor. I sometimes use chocolate collagen powder instead when I want the chocolate flavor plus some extra protein.
- Granular sugar substitute: Use your preferred sweetener that measures similarly to sugar.
- Baking powder: Helps the cake rise as it cooks.
- Egg: Gives the mug cake structure while keeping the center soft.
- Vanilla extract: Rounds out the chocolate flavor.
How to Make a Keto Chocolate Mug Cake
Melt the butter
Add the butter to a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug and heat until melted.
Pour in the remaining ingredients
Add the almond flour, cocoa powder or chocolate collagen powder, sweetener, and baking powder. Add the egg and vanilla.
Mix
Whisk with a fork or small whisk until the batter is smooth, scraping the bottom and sides of the mug so no dry ingredients remain.
Microwave
Microwave for about 1 minute, or until the top is set and the center is still soft and cake-like.

Tips for the Best Keto Mug Cake
- Use a 12-ounce mug: This gives the cake enough room to rise without overflowing.
- Mix thoroughly: Cocoa powder and almond flour can settle into the bottom corners of the mug.
- Don’t overcook it: A dry or rubbery mug cake usually means it stayed in the microwave too long.
- Adjust for your microwave: Use 1 minute as a starting point since microwave power can vary.
Almond Flour vs. Coconut Flour
I usually make this keto chocolate mug cake with almond flour, but coconut flour works too. Use:
- 3 tablespoons almond flour, or
- 1 tablespoon coconut flour
Coconut flour absorbs much more liquid, so the amounts are not interchangeable.
Chocolate Mug Cake Add-Ins
You can mix in a small amount of:
- Sugar-free chocolate chips
- Chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds
- Peppermint extract: Add a drop or two for a chocolate-mint version.
- Chocolate collagen powder: I sometimes use this in place of the cocoa powder when I want the chocolate flavor plus extra protein.

Topping Ideas
Serve the mug cake warm as-is or add:
- Homemade whipped cream
- Sugar-free chocolate chips
- Chopped nuts
- A few berries
