This Homemade Gluten-free Keto Taco Seasoning recipe is perfect for Taco Tuesday or any day. It’s great for those who want to enjoy the taco flavor without unnecessary fillers and added sugars. This recipe takes just a few minutes and can be stored in a jar. This post includes the spice mix, but also several recipes to enjoy taco seasoning with.
Who Needs a Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix?
Spices and spice blends are one of the hardest ingredients to find “clean” versions of when you go grocery shopping. If you are Keto or doing Whole30, avoiding sugar is a must. But, when you start reading labels, you find that it’s in nearly everything.
Besides that, some spices also have fillers that we might not be aware of. I’ve also noticed that some blends didn’t sit well with my stomach so I decided it was time to start mixing up my own seasonings.
Ingredients in Taco Seasoning
To start the flavor profile out, I use chili powder. The rest of the profile is made up of:
- oregano or Italian seasoning
- sea salt
This will give you a really great base that isn’t too spicy so you can use it for meals for the entire family. The kids will get the familiar taco flavor without burning their mouths, and can, of course, add sour cream to their meal to tone things down if needed.
If you like spice and can handle the heat, you can choose to add cayenne powder or chipotle powder or even both! Go easy on them at first until you know how much you can handle.
How to Make Keto Taco Seasoning
To make this taco seasoning, you just need to mix the blend in a jar.
I love to keep some of these empty jars on hand for my spice mixes because they have nice wide mouths. By using a wide-mouth jar, you won’t need to dirty a bowl or even a funnel to add the spices to a smaller jar. You can also toss the mix together in the jar.
The only downside of using these jars is that there aren’t the typical sprinkle holes. I tend to measure my spices out before using them, but if you prefer, you can try out these spice jars or reuse an empty spice jar that you have at home.
How Many Carbs in Homemade Taco Seasoning
Because you aren’t adding sugar, you aren’t adding a crazy amount of carbs. This seasoning blend adds lots of flavor without any worry. It has:
- 0g net carbs
- 1 actual carb per teaspoon with 1g fiber
- 5 calories per teaspoon
