Keto Taco Seasoning gives you warm, smoky taco flavor without sugar or cornstarch. This homemade gluten-free spice blend takes just a few minutes to mix, stores well in a jar, and works anywhere you’d normally use a packet of taco seasoning.

Low carb taco seasoning recipe with chili powder and spices

I like keeping homemade seasoning blends on hand because they make dinner faster and give me more control over what goes into the mix. I use this one most often for taco meat, shredded chicken, and easy bowls with Pico de Gallo, Keto Queso, and Cilantro Lime Cauliflower Rice.

Why You’ll Love This Keto Taco Seasoning

  • Easy to adjust: Keep it mild for family meals, or add cayenne pepper and chipotle powder when you want more heat and smoky flavor.
  • Made without sugar or cornstarch: This gives you a homemade taco seasoning option when you want classic taco flavor without those ingredients.
  • Works as a taco seasoning swap: Use it in recipes that call for taco seasoning when you need a gluten-free, no-sugar, no-cornstarch option.
  • Ready in 5 minutes: Mix the spices once, store them in a jar, and keep the blend ready for taco meat, bowls, salads, nachos, lettuce wraps, and quick skillet meals.

Why Make Homemade Keto Taco Seasoning?

Taco seasoning is one of those pantry staples that seems simple until you start reading labels. I started making my own because I wanted classic taco flavor in a blend I could use for quick meals, meal prep, and taco night without checking a packet every time.

This version uses pantry spices, stores well, and works with ground beef, chicken, turkey, shrimp, vegetables, and taco-style meals.

Is Taco Seasoning Gluten-Free?

Some taco seasoning packets are gluten-free, but not all of them. Store-bought blends can include starches, anti-caking ingredients, or other added ingredients, so it is always worth checking the label if gluten-free matters for your household.

This homemade taco seasoning is gluten-free because it uses a simple blend of spices without flour or cornstarch. If you are using store-bought chili powder as part of the blend, check that label too since spice blends can vary by brand.

Taco Seasoning Without Sugar or Cornstarch

Many packet-style taco seasonings include sugar, cornstarch, or other added ingredients for sweetness, texture, or thickening. I keep this blend simple with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, salt, and optional heat.

Since this version does not include cornstarch, I like to add a splash of water or broth when making taco meat. That helps the spices coat the meat evenly and gives you the saucy taco meat texture you expect from a packet.

ingredients to make keto taco seasoning

Ingredients in Taco Seasoning

This keto taco seasoning uses simple spices that create a warm, savory taco flavor without making the blend too spicy.

  • Chili powder: This gives the seasoning its classic taco flavor. Since chili powder blends can vary by brand, use one you already like.
  • Ground cumin: Adds the warm, earthy flavor that makes taco seasoning taste familiar.
  • Garlic powder and onion powder: These round out the blend and make it work well with beef, chicken, turkey, shrimp, and vegetables.
  • Dried oregano: Adds a little herby flavor. Italian seasoning can work in a pinch if that is what you have.
  • Paprika: Adds color and a mild smoky-sweet note.
  • Sea salt: Helps the flavors come through once the seasoning is added to meat or vegetables.
  • Cayenne pepper, optional: Adds heat. Start small if you are making this for the whole family.
  • Chipotle powder, optional: Adds smoky heat. You can use it with or instead of cayenne.

The main ingredients give you taco flavor without a lot of heat, so it works well for family meals. If you like your taco meat spicier, add cayenne pepper, chipotle powder, or both.

How to Make Keto Taco Seasoning

Mix the spices in a jar

Add all of the spices to an airtight jar or container, then stir or shake until everything is evenly combined. A wide-mouth jar works well because you can add the spices directly to the jar without using a separate bowl or funnel.

Store it for easy taco nights

Keep the seasoning in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. Homemade spice blends can settle as they sit, so give the jar a quick shake or stir before measuring.

Choose the right jar for how you cook

I usually measure my seasoning with a spoon, so I like using small jars with wide openings. If you prefer to sprinkle seasoning directly over food, you can reuse an empty spice jar or use a jar with sprinkle holes.

How Much Taco Seasoning to Use Per Pound of Meat

Use 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning per pound of meat. This gives ground beef, ground turkey, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables a well-seasoned taco flavor without overpowering the dish.

For ground meat, cook the meat first, then sprinkle the seasoning over it. Add a splash of water or broth and stir until the spices coat the meat evenly.

When to Use This Keto Taco Seasoning

Use this keto taco seasoning anywhere a recipe calls for taco seasoning and you want a homemade option without sugar or cornstarch. It’s especially helpful when you need a simple swap for a packet or another taco seasoning blend.

For example, my Slow Cooker Mexican Shredded Chicken uses my Chicken Taco Seasoning as the main seasoning, but you can use this keto taco seasoning instead if you want to keep that recipe free from cornstarch.

That makes this blend useful for taco night, meal prep, bowls, salads, nachos, and quick skillet meals.

How Many Carbs Are in Homemade Taco Seasoning?

This homemade keto taco seasoning is made without sugar or cornstarch. The exact carb count can vary slightly depending on the brand of spices you use, especially the chili powder.

Per teaspoon, this seasoning has about:

  • 1 total carb
  • 1g fiber
  • 0g net carbs
  • 5 calories

What Taco Seasoning Is Keto-Friendly From the Store?

I like making spice blends at home, but I also know that sometimes you need a quick store-bought option. When buying taco seasoning, check the label for sugar, starches, cornstarch, flour, or other added ingredients if you are trying to avoid them.

A store-bought option can work when the ingredient list matches what you need. I still keep this homemade blend ready because it only takes a few minutes to mix and uses spices I usually have on hand.

How to Use Taco Seasoning to Make Taco Meat

I use this taco seasoning for quick taco meat when I am meal prepping, making Keto Taco Salad, or setting up an easy taco bowl night.

For simple all-purpose taco meat, use:

  • 2 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning
  • 1 pound ground beef, I used 85/15
  • 1/2 yellow onion, sliced thin, optional
  • 1 can diced tomatoes with the liquid, optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Cook the meat, then add the seasoning with a splash of water or broth so the spices coat everything evenly. You can keep it simple with just the meat and seasoning, or add onions and diced tomatoes for a saucier taco meat.

Use the finished taco meat for Keto Nachos, taco salad, lettuce wraps, or as another protein option in my Keto Carnitas Burrito Bowl.

Recipes to Use Keto Taco Seasoning With

Once you have this keto taco seasoning mixed, you can use it in recipes that call for taco seasoning when you want a gluten-free, no-sugar, no-cornstarch option.

Try it with:

  • Slow Cooker Mexican Shredded Chicken, as a no-cornstarch swap for the Chicken Taco Seasoning used in that recipe
  • Keto 7 Layer Taco Dip
  • Easy Fajita Vegetables
  • Ground Turkey Taco Bowl
  • Keto Taco Salad
  • Cheese Taco Shells
  • Keto Nachos
  • Keto Carnitas Burrito Bowl

For bowls, I like pairing seasoned taco meat or shredded chicken with Pico de Gallo, Keto Queso, and Cilantro Lime Cauliflower Rice. It gives you a full taco bowl setup with fresh salsa, creamy cheese sauce, and a simple low-carb rice base.

Recipe Notes

  • Use 2 tablespoons (or 6 teaspoons) per pound of meat: This amount gives ground beef, chicken, turkey, shrimp, or vegetables a well-seasoned taco flavor.
  • Use it as a taco seasoning swap: Use this blend in recipes that call for taco seasoning when you need a gluten-free, no-sugar, no-cornstarch option.
  • Add liquid when making taco meat: Since this blend does not include cornstarch, add a splash of water or broth after sprinkling the seasoning over cooked meat. This helps the spices coat everything evenly.
  • Adjust the heat: Cayenne pepper and chipotle powder are optional. Use one or both if you like a spicier, smokier taco seasoning.
  • Check your chili powder: Chili powder blends vary by brand. Some include salt or extra ingredients, so check the label if you need the full blend to stay gluten-free.
  • Store it tightly sealed: Keep the seasoning in an airtight jar or spice container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
  • Shake before using: Homemade spice blends can settle as they sit, so shake or stir the jar before measuring.
