These air fryer fried chicken wings have golden, crispy skin and juicy meat without flour, breading, or deep frying. They’re simply seasoned and ready in about 30 minutes.

Overhead view of a plate of wings, garnished with parsley, with a bowl of dipping sauce

This air fryer chicken wings recipe uses the same seasoning and baking powder method as my crispy oven baked chicken wings, but cooks the wings in the air fryer instead. I usually make them in my Ninja Foodi, but the method works in other air fryers too.

Why Make This

  • Crispy without breading: Baking powder helps the skin get golden and crisp without flour.
  • Ready in about 30 minutes: The air fryer is my faster option when I don’t want to make the same crispy wings in the oven.
  • Works with whole or split wings: Use whole chicken wings or a mix of flats and drumettes.
Overhead view of the labeled ingredients needed for air fried wings: a plate of raw chicken wings, a jug of olive oil, a bowl of baking powder with a spoon, and a plate with black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, sea salt, and onion powder

Ingredients Needed

Here are a few notes about the main ingredients. Check the recipe card below for the exact amounts.

  • Chicken wings: Use whole wings or a mix of flats and drumettes.
  • Seasonings: I use paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. For an easy shortcut, replace all of the spices and salt with my Cajun seasoning or Creole seasoning.
  • Baking powder: This helps the skin get crisp in the air fryer. Do not substitute baking soda. They aren’t interchangeable.
  • Olive oil: You only need a small amount.

How to Make Fried Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer

Dry and season the wings

Pat the raw chicken wings very dry with paper towels. Toss them with the seasonings and baking powder until evenly coated.

Arrange the wings

Place the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer with space between them. Drizzle with olive oil.

Air fry until crispy

Air fry at 400°F for 12-15 minutes. Flip the wings and cook for another 12-15 minutes, until the skin is browned and crisp.

Four numbered pictures: first, a bowl with raw chicken wings, next to a bowl of spice rub and a a jug of olive oil; second, a bowl of raw chicken wings coated in spice rub; third, raw, seasoned chicken wings in the air fryer basket; and fourth, crispy chicken wings in an air fryer basket

How Long to Cook Chicken Wings in the Air Fryer

Raw chicken wings take about 24-30 minutes at 400°F, flipping halfway through. I use the same temperature in my Ninja Foodi and when I’m using other air fryers. While chicken wings are safe to eat once they reach 165°F, I cook these longer so the skin has time to get golden and crispy. Whole or larger wings can take a few extra minutes.

Wing Sauce Options

These wings have plenty of flavor as-is, but they also make an easy base for different sauces. I sometimes toss them in the sauce from my garlic Parmesan chicken wings or one of these:

  • Homemade BBQ sauce
  • Sweet chili sauce
  • Sugar-free teriyaki sauce
  • Sweet and sour sauce

Tips for Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

  • Don’t crowd the basket: Leave space between the wings so hot air can circulate. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Use baking powder, not baking soda: Baking soda can leave the wings with an unpleasant flavor.

What to Serve With Air Fryer Fried Wings

Serve the wings with blue cheese dressing or Ranch dressing for dipping. Copycat Chick-fil-A sauce is another option.

For a full meal, try one of these combinations:

  • Soul food-style: Southern Candied Yams, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, and Collard Greens with Bacon.
  • Classic fried chicken-style: Southern Coleslaw, Potato Wedges, and Creamed Corn.
Air Fryer Fried Wings and sauce on a plate

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

  • Refrigerate: Store leftover wings in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: Air fry at 360°F for 6-7 minutes, or heat them in a 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes.
  • Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen, adding a few extra minutes as needed.

More Air Fryer Chicken Wing Recipes

This air fryer wing method is also what I use for many of my flavored wings. Try it with:

  • Dry Rub Chicken Wings
  • Sweet Chili Wings
  • Air Fryer BBQ Wings
  • Ranch Wings
  • Honey Sriracha Wings
  • Air Fryer Buffalo Wings

Recommended Equipment

Ninja Foodi

Ingredients

Chicken Wings

  • 1 ½ pounds Chicken Wings, sectioned into flats and drums
  • ¼ teaspoon Natural Ancient Sea Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Smoked Paprika
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder, You cannot swap baking soda in this recipe – I promise that the wings will not taste good if you do
  • 1 teaspoon Olive Oil

Instructions

  • Remove the chicken wing parts from the refrigerator and pat dry (removing as much moisture as possible helps to have a crispy wing skin).
  • Mix the sea salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and baking powder in a small dish or ramekin.
  • Sprinkle the seasoning mixture on the wings and toss to coat.
  • Place the wings on the cooking basket. In the Ninja Foodi, this is called the “Cook & Crisp” basket.
  • Drizzle olive oil on the chicken wings.
  • Use the Air Crisp setting on 390 degrees for the Ninja Foodi or 400 degrees on other fryers to cook the wings for 12-15 minutes per side.
  • Enjoy the wings alone or add your favorite keto or low-carb dips and sauces.

Recipe Notes

  • Pat the wings very dry for the crispiest skin.
  • Do not substitute baking soda for baking powder.
  • Cajun or Creole seasoning can replace all of the spices and salt.
  • Cook in a single layer and avoid overcrowding the basket.
  • Chicken is safe at 165°F, but I cook the wings longer so the skin gets golden and crispy. Whole or larger wings can take a few extra minutes.

Wings have become expensive. Could I use other parts cut smaller?

      Hi Mary,

If you mean other parts of the wing (ex: instead of whole wings), this recipe works with flats, drummettes, or party wings too! If you mean other cuts of chicken, it would be better to use my recipes for things like air fryer chicken bites (there’s flavors for bbq, buffalo and more linked there or air fryer chicken tenders. This recipe includes baking powder to crisp the wing skin and other parts of the chicken just don’t need that.

Hope that helps & thanks for asking!

I’m glad that I tried this chicken wing recipe it’s worth the time and prep. After air frying in my Ninja Foodi I removed the basket and threw in some fresh whole mushrooms to the wing drippings and air fried those for 12 minutes at 350°…..all I can say is superb. I even took some pics. I didn’t have any baking powder so I substituted self rising flour.

      Hi John,

It’s about a 1/2 pound of wings per serving. So, that usually works out to about 4-5 wings.

      Thanks,

These chicken wings were better than any commercially fried wings.. used different spices and no oil . They key I believe to this recipe is the baking powder. The wings were so crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside.

No need for layers. I just tossed about two pounds ofFred the seasoned wings in the basket and let them cook. I tossed and shook them after 10 minutes cooking and continued cooking for a total of 20 minutes. PERFECT.

I’m happy this worked out for you, Fred. I don’t mind this method either, but when I want my wings super crispy, I have to do the layers or toss them way more than I like to for the same result. Thank you so much for stopping back and leaving this review 🙂

What is the point of the olive oil?

    How important is it?

*** Also, I’ve heard that cooking sprays can eat the finish of some Air Fryers so I’d be careful about that. Apparently the aerosol is what ruins the finish.

It helps with the crisping sort of like the oil in a deep fryer. You are just using less in this recipe. My foodi has honestly been a true workhorse over the last 5+ years. So, I haven’t had to worry about the finish even with running it through the dishwasher almost daily during that time.

Yes! When they aren’t flat, the air has a tough time circulating so they steam. For the crispiest wings, it’s best to make sure they all have space. Thank you for asking.

      Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for asking. I was able to update the blog post to answer this question. Essentially, if you don’t use baking powder, the wings have more of a oven roasted/broiled texture similar to my spicy dry rub wings (I didn’t use baking powder in that recipe).

      Hope that helps!

I just got the Foodi XL 9 in 1 cooker for Christmas!😊
Super excited to start using all of its functions (pressure cooked a roast…yumm!] But I have a question….
Can you use the air crisper/fryer rack in the crisper basket (the smaller of the two racks) for a double layer of wings? This product advetized as being large enough for a family (and even says “small crowd”!) I can not feed my family on 12 wings as you show fitting here.
If I do it in batches, keeping first batch in oven to stay hot, I am increasing the time back to what it takes in the oven, and dirtying a second sheet pan (liked the idea of one pot dirty!😊

      Hi Debbie,

Congrats on getting a new Foodi. It’s one of my favorite appliances. I haven’t tried to use the rack. Since air flow is important to getting these wings as crispy as pictured, I’ll say that you could try to do a double layer with the rack, but you will likely need to adjust the cooking time. I’d start with 15 minutes, flip the wings, check at 10 minutes, and then check in on them in 5 minute intervals until they are crisp enough for you.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it turns out.

      Best,

      Hi Ann,

I haven’t tried to do this. I also wouldn’t recommend it since air flow is really important for getting these crispy. When I’m making a lot of wings, I simply cook them in the oven with my baked chicken wings recipe.

Just new to the the foodi can you layer the wings or single layer only? Thanks

      Hi Teena,

I only use a single layer. This allows the wings to have enough air fryer to get crispy. Enjoy your new Foodi. It’s one of my favorite appliances.

Thanks for the assist. Everything was great except for the cooking time. I went with 12 minutes (I have a Ninja Foodie) and they looked pretty done so I did 8 minutes for the second rotation. My wings were still over done. For my 2nd batch I did 10 minutes and then 8 minutes – wings were still a little harder than I would like. Perhaps because I used wingettes? Next time I will go with 8 & maybe 6 to 8 the 2nd rotation.

      Hi Regina,

Yes – the cook time will vary based on how large your wings are. I’m using whole chicken wings and cut them into parts or whole wings. In the future (and as you mention), you can just pop open the air fryer and take a look at them to get them as crisp as you like.

Thanks so much for stopping back to provide feedback and a review.

What do you do differently if your wings are frozen…like mentioned up in the article.

      Hi Jada,

I just changed the section header so that the directions with frozen wings stand out more. When my wings are frozen, I use the cold water method to thaw them out quickly. It takes about 30 minutes. The Foodi manual recommends using the pressure cooker and 1/2 cup of water for 5 minutes, but I don’t use that one because you can accidentally start to cook the wings. After the wings are thawed, you can follow the rest of the directions.

      Hope that helps!

Excellent flavor and tricks to getting the crunchiest wings! I covered all the chicken with the seasoning but worried it was too much — it wasn’t! Husband gave a silent munching thumbs up and asked if there were more. Winner winner air fried chicken dinner!

The Ninja Foodie does not have temperatures above 210. What function are you using and how do you select 400 degrees? Thank you.

Hi Karen – it seems like you are measuring in Celsius. All of the temperatures across the site are in Fahrenheit. In your case, you can set your Foodi to about 205 degrees. Thanks!

      Hi Tia,

It’s 1/2 lb of wings per person. For me, that’s usually 4-5 wings.

My question is about the 12-15 minutes ‘per side.’
Since the wings are on racks and circulating air is what is cooking them, what is the need of turning them?

    • Davinah says

      January 4, 2020 at 3:57 pm

      Hi Juli!

You can absolutely test this out for yourself, but after owning several brands of air fryers, I find that you still need to flip the food over to ensure even cooking and browning. Plus, even though the air circulates, the heating element is still on top.

      Thanks,
      Davinah

Sooo Yummy ? I put your seasonings in a Ziploc baggie and shook my fresh chicken drummettes in it and then into my Ninja Foodi. Came out great and then mixed them into different flavors for the family. Plain, Salt-n-Vinegar, BBQ, Buffalo. I’ve been trying different basic wing seasonings and yours is the winner.

      Hi Terri!

I’m so happy that you enjoyed these and mixed them in some different flavors! I’ll have to use your Ziploc idea since that’s a guaranteed way of getting all the wings evenly tossed! Appreciate that you took the time to stop back and comment.
