Making your own seasonings is simple. You take the basic spices you have on hand and combine them to evoke your favorite flavors. My homemade Cajun seasoning recipe is perfect when you want to create Cajun food at home. I first shared it as part of my keto shrimp and cauliflower grits recipe, but it can be used for any protein or vegetable like my air fryer cajun shrimp and air fryer cajun wings!
What is Cajun seasoning?
Cajun seasoning is popular, especially in Louisiana. Oftentimes, Creole and Cajun are thought of as the same thing, but this isn’t the case for foodies in the know. Creole cooking tends to use a wider range of ingredients and is thought of as quite fancy – it originated from people who were typically wealthy. While Cajun cooking is humble and characterized by vegetables, rice, and whatever protein you might find.
What is in Cajun seasoning & spice mix?
Everyone has their own spin but generally, cajun seasoning includes smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, celery seed, and thyme. It also includes different ground peppers.
In this recipe, I’m using staples, but also a shortcut. I’m using Old Bay seasoning as one ingredient because it includes some cajun seasoning staples and allows me to get all the flavor without going too crazy with the number of ingredients.
How to Make Cajun Seasoning at Home
Select an airtight jar with a great lid. I love using these spice jars.
I love to use ones that are both pretty and functional so that I can display my seasonings to be able to use them.
Simply measure your spices into the jar, shake to combine, and store for about 6 months.
Cajun Spice Mix Recipe Uses
As I mentioned, you can use this spice mix on a variety of proteins and vegetables. Here are some tips for using it in your kitchen:
- Use 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of seafood, beef, pork, or chicken – you can always add more to taste, but this is a good starting point
- Mix it into your favorite sauces or dips – don’t be afraid to experiment! One teaspoon goes a long way!
