5 Types of Supplements for Keto

  • Share

There are a lot of supplements that I use as part of following a ketogenic, or low-carb, high fat diet. Some of them are helpful for general health. For instance, regardless of whether you follow keto, bone broth collagen is beneficial for digestion and electrolytes help to restore vital nutrients after a hard workout. While you don’t have to use all of them, I’m sharing this information because I think it might be helpful.

If you’re wondering why and how some use bone broth collagen, collagen peptides, electrolytes, exogenous ketones, and MCT, then this is for you.

  • Bone Broth Collagen

  • Collagen Peptides

  • Electrolytes

  • Exogenous Ketones

  • MCT Oil & MCT Oil Powder

If you were hoping to get a discount on some keto supplements, here are a few:

Bone Broth Collagen

I use bone broth collagen to satisfy hunger cravings & to thicken sauces without carbs

Bone Broth Collagen is a great way to add protein and nutrients to your diet. Some use it (and collagen generally) to help with their skin and nails. Others use bone broth collagen to help them with their gut. I drink bone broth collagen because it helps to satisfy my hunger cravings during intermittent fasting (each scoop has more than 9g of Protein). I also find that it is the perfect carb-free sauce thickener (just add 1 serving to 1/3 cup of water). Two brands that I prefer are Vital Proteins (the most expensive bone broth that I’ve tried – $65 for a 10oz tub and Whole30 certified) and Ketologie (half the price – $35 for a 12.7oz tub, and the most drinkable because it is well seasoned). Both have chicken and beef flavors.

Collagen Peptides

I use collagen peptides for clearer skin & to add protein to my morning coffee.

I use Collagen to support my hair and nail growth, but also my skin clarity. As someone who has dealt with eczema my entire life, this has become a tool for keeping my skin “Ford tough” in the summer (when the symptoms of eczema get worse). I mix Collagen Peptides in my butter coffee as well as cold drinks. One thing to note is that when adding this to cold drinks, I never put this at the bottom of my cup (that’s the easiest way for this to become a clumpy mess and get stuck). Instead, I add a scoop or two at the top of the liquid or on top of the ice then shake it vigorously. I’ve used Vital Proteins’ Collagen the longest and love that it is Whole30 approved, but have also had a good experience with Sports Research’s Collagen.

Electrolytes

I use electrolytes to reduce muscle cramps, but also to avoid keto flu

For me, electrolytes are helpful for avoiding keto-flu and for reducing muscle soreness after a workout. They also help me drink more water throughout the day.

Exogenous Ketones

I use exogenous ketones as a pre-workout & for low-calorie energy

One of the purposes of following a keto diet is to make more ketones. For me, when my ketone levels are 1.5-2.5 mmg/l, I feel awesome and am losing weight. There are times when my ketones are not in this range, so I use exogenous ketones for an extra boost in energy. I prefer to use this as a pre-workout or with intermittent fasting after a “cheat meal”. Since there is a thing as having too many ketones, I use these and monitor my ketone levels with Keto Mojo. Key Keto’s flavors are more juice-like (Strawberry Lemonade is one that I really love), while Perfect Keto has more milkshake/cream based flavors (Salted Caramel, Chocolate).

MCT Oil & MCT Oil Powder

I use MCT oil and MCT oil powder to increase my ketones & as a healthy fat option in coffee & cooking.

When I am in need of good, clean fat, I choose an avocado or MCT Oil. MCT Oil is a perfect addition to my butter coffee. It’s also an awesome cooking oil because it’s flavorless. When I was struggling to get into ketosis, adding more MCT Oil and using less butter was how I got over the hump. I’ve tried a few brands of MCT Oil – Perfect Keto, Sports Research, and Nature’s Way. I find that they all do the same thing, but my favorite liquid version is Nature’s Way. Besides being an effective & affordable keto supplement, it has a solidly constructed top – there’s a no-leak top that means I get more of what I pay for (all of the other brands that I’ve tried have leaky bottles).
