Roasting a whole chicken in the air fryer couldn’t get any easier with this Ninja Foodi Air Fryer Roasted Whole Chicken recipe. It includes just four ingredients and takes less than an hour to make. No need to marinate or allow it to sit in dry rub. Enjoy this with my air fryer frozen broccoli, air fryer squash, or cauliflower mash with gravy to make it a meal.
Why Make This
- 4 ingredients: this recipe comes together with just four ingredients. Besides the herb seasoning that I picked up from the store, you probably already have these in your pantry.
- No planning necessary: after making my air fryer whole chicken with a dry rub, one common request was for an option that didn’t require allowing the spices and chicken flavors to meld for several hours. So, I tested this recipe to make sure it was super easy and didn’t include any waiting.
Ingredients Needed
- Whole Chicken: I got a fresh, young bird. I try to stay below 4.25 pounds, but any bird that fits in your air fryer will work.
- Sea Salt: I’m using fine sea salt since the finer grain tends to distribute better throughout the food.
- 24 Herb Sprinkle Seasoning: this spice mix includes 24 herbs and seasoning like garlic powder, sage, savory, and onion powder. I use it in so many easy recipes because it packs so much flavor in one jar (and you don’t have to make it yourself).
- Avocado Oil: this is my go-to air fryer oil. But, if you don’t have it in your pantry or would like another option, I created a list of the best oils for air frying that can give you some options.
How to Roast a Whole Chicken in an Air Fryer
- Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel. Add the sea salt, sprinkle seasoning and oil to a large bowl with the chicken. Then, evenly coat the chicken with the seasoning and oil.
- Add the chicken to the air fryer cooking basket breast side down. Air crisp on 350 for about 10 min per lb (for a 4lb chicken that’s 40 minutes).
- Use tongs to flip the bird. I clamp the tongs between the center and the back to not break the breast side skin.
- Air Crisp at 400 degrees to get the skin brown & crisp.
Top Cooking Tips & FAQs
- No need to preheat: you do not need to preheat your Ninja Foodi air fryer for this recipe.
- Spread the flavor: I spread the rub in the inside cavity and underneath the breast skin.
- Remove the innards: most chickens come with things like the chicken liver and neck on the inside. Don’t forget to remove those before cooking.
- Let the chicken rest: before cutting into your whole chicken, allow it to rest in the Ninja Foodi Cooking pot with the lid open. This allows the juices to circulate and helps both the chicken and cooking pot cool down enough to eat.
Yes. All of my air fryer chicken recipes feature raw chicken.
Most air fryer manuals describe the size chicken that can fit comfortably in that specific model. I personally use a 8qt model, but have fit whole chickens in my 6qt model as well.
Yes. You can use foil as a liner for the bottom of your whole chicken. But, since my air fryer has parts that are dishwasher safe, I skip the lining. Instead, I place my whole chicken in the Ninja Foodi air fryer basket.
