I’m Davinah, a wife, mom, educator, recipe developer, and long time lover of great tasting food.
After earning a PhD in Education in 2017 and finding myself with more free time, cooking became my creative outlet. I was not trying to become a food blogger. I just wanted real food that tasted amazing, used simple ingredients, and helped me take better care of myself and the people I love.
What started as sharing new foodie finds and low carb comfort food remakes on Instagram slowly grew into something deeper: a love for helping everyday cooks feel confident in the kitchen.
How I Learned to Cook
I learned to cook from my mom, who learned from her grandmother, a woman who made nearly everything from scratch and passed those skills down like family heirlooms. Recipes were not always written down. Sometimes they lived in memory, on scraps of paper, or on the back of an envelope. Every meal was made with care, seasoned until our ancestors were pleased, and meant to bring people together.
Sunday dinners at my grandmother’s house, filled with food and after church fellowship, are traditions I hold close. As a wife, mom, and busy entrepreneur, I knew I needed ways to honor those traditions while still living in the reality of a busy life.
This blog is where that balance lives. It is about keeping the flavors and traditions we love, while making them work for real life.
Fun Facts
- Before starting Dr. Davinah’s Eats, I taught middle school math and later pre-service teachers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Teaching others, whether in the kitchen or the classroom, brings me genuine joy.
- I once climbed one of the tallest Mayan pyramids and then scooted all the way down because going up was much easier than coming back down.
- I am a proud homebody, which means when I say “I’ll let you know,” it usually means no, and I am very okay with that.
- I am extremely organized in most areas of my life, spreadsheets included, yet somehow have nearly 500 tabs open on my phone and around 100,000 unread emails.
