This Air Fryer Butternut Squash recipe is the easiest way to roast butternut squash. It takes less than half the time compared to a conventional oven. Plus, like my air fryer squash, this recipe uses 6 ingredients and comes together in 20 minutes with just a few steps. Keep reading to learn how to make butternut squash in the Ninja Foodi (or another air fryer) and get tips for sweet butternut squash and air-fried butternut squash fries.

Why Make Air-fried Butternut Squash

  • Simple and Easy Side Dish: This squash recipe is as easy as 1,2,3. All you do is mix the 6 simple ingredients, put them in the air fryer, and set the timer. You’ll only turn the cubes once to ensure they are evenly cooked.
  • Quick: Roasting butternut squash in a traditional oven takes at least 40 minutes, double the time you’ll need to roast butternut squash in an air fryer.
  • Nutritious and low in calories: Butternut is rich in nutrients and low in calories.

Ingredients Needed

This easy air fryer recipe doesn’t require much. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

  • Butternut Squash: I buy pre-cut butternut squash from the grocery store to save prep time. But, you can use a vegetable peeler and sharp knife to peel and cut the squash into 1-inch cubes too! My package amounts to about a medium butternut squash
  • Olive oil or Avocado oil: This helps the seasonings stick and facilitates browning.
  • 24 herbs sprinkle seasoning: I love this seasoning blend because it is a quick way to add a lot of flavor without requiring too many spices. But, you can also switch this up with your favorite salt-free blended seasoning options.
  • Natural ancient sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Cinnamon: this gives the butternut squash a warm flavor for Fall. I especially love to add cinnamon when making roasted butternut squash soup

Be sure to check out the recipe card at the end of the post for full instructions and the exact ingredient amounts.

steps to make Air Fryer Butternut Squash

Tips & FAQs

  • Adjust the cooking time and work in batches if needed: depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to cook your butternut squash in batches. For best results, be sure to add them to your air fryer basket in a single layer.

Variations

  • If you’d like to make sweet butternut squash: Use cinnamon, sugar-free maple syrup (or a maple syrup you prefer), and brown sugar (or brown sugar replacement) to make a sweet version. You can roast the squash with cinnamon and add maple and/or brown sugar to taste.
  • To make butternut squash fries in the air fryer: use spirals or zig-zag butternut cuts if you want something decorative or would like to enjoy butternut squash as a replacement for sweet potato fries.
  • To roast a whole butternut squash: roasting a whole butternut squash takes longer than the cubes. Simply cut your squash in half and remove the core. Then, use the remaining steps to roast a whole squash face up. No need to flip it, but you might need to add some additional time to cook it until it is tender.
  • Use this to make butternut squash soup: You can enjoy this as the perfect side dish, but also as a base for soup. All you need are two additional ingredients and a blender to make delicious soup the easy way.

Storage and Leftovers

Store leftover squash in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Is squash good in the air fryer?

Yes. Besides this recipe, I’ve made air fryer yellow and zucchini squash and air fryer spaghetti squash with great results.

Is butternut squash a carb?

Butternut is a vegetable but is relatively higher in carbs than other squashes like the air fryer spaghetti squash. One cup (205g) of cooked butternut has 22g of carbs.

Do you need to peel the squash before roasting?

You can use peeled or unpeeled squash. After all, the skin is edible when roasted. My personal preference is to peel it.

What is the best temperature for cooking butternut squash in the air fryer?

I roast my air fryer butternut squash at 400 degrees.
